The Benefit Of Buying A Used Semi Truck

Posted on: 11 January 2017

When you are in the market for a semi truck, you could spend a lot of money on a brand new truck, but you have to decide what you need and how much you can afford to spend. If you are running small loads, or just getting started as a business, you might not want to overextend yourself with large payments every month without really knowing what your income level will be. Here are a few reasons to consider a used truck over a brand-new one.

Starting Small and Expanding Later

If you are just getting started with your own truck as an owner-operator, buying a brand-new truck might be tempting, but the outlay of money may not be something you want right now. Not knowing what your business will produce for profit is reason enough to try and keep costs low. There are some great used trucks on the market, and buying through a used truck dealer is a great way to find well-maintained, lightly used trucks that still have a lot of life left in them.

Lower Insurance Costs

When you own a new truck, the insurance costs are going to be a lot higher than on a used truck. When you buy insurance, the year of the truck and the replacement cost of it are all considered. You may also not be required to carry the same type of insurance, but that will depend on the requirements of the finance company.

Upkeep and Cost of Repairs

Whether you buy a new truck or a used truck, there are always costs associated with the upkeep of the truck. In the case of a used truck, you might be able to save some money because there are more used parts available from semi truck salvage yards. Salvage parts for newer trucks are not as easily available, but there may be some out there. Look around a little and you may be surprised how much money you can save with used parts.

Warranties

You can get a used truck that still carries a warranty. In some cases, the truck may have a remaining factory warranty on it that can be transferred to the new owner. Along with that, you can buy an extended warranty, much like you can for a car, so talk to the dealer about what they offer and what trucks they have that may have a factory warranty still available.
